Universal Orlando & Toddlers
Should I take my toddler to Universal?
Orlando Florida is a Mecca of family amusement. There are so many places to go, things to see, and adventures to be had in Orlando that someone could spend a month there and not get to everything this area has to offer. The trouble any family has is finding places that make everyone happy.
Personally, Disney World is my answer! But, even I want more than just Disney for a week long vacation. We chose Universal Orlando this time around. The major draw of Universal is the World that is Harry Potter. My husband is a huge fan and spending time in this Wizarding World sounded perfect. I didn’t do a lot of research because unlike Disney, Universal is pretty low key and you don’t need dining reservations 120 days in advance, or Fast Passes. They do offer an Express Pass like Disney’s Fast Pass, but it’s an additional fee. We didn’t utilize this service this time because with it just being the 3 of us we could utilize rider switch. I figured it would just be easy to show up at Universal and have a blast.
Well, let me tell you about Universal Orlando and what they have to offer toddlers. It was eye opening.
Islands of Adventure
This park is separated into “islands”. It’s nice because it’s all set up around a lake, making it easy to visit all the areas without missing something. Island of Adventure has 7 islands. Each island has places to eat, but I’m going to focus on attractions alone. Marvel Superhero Island, Skull Island, and the Lost Continent have nothing to offer toddlers. They are to small for the rides, and the one walk through is too scary, in my opinion. Toon Lagoon has a walk through play area. Jurassic Park offers Camp Jurassic which is a big playground with a ride as well. My 3 year old loved it here for about 30 minutes. Harry Potter’s Hogsmeade has one ride if your toddler is at least 36”, as well as the train that takes you to the other park. The biggest and best place for toddlers in Island of Adventure is Seuss Landing. There are 4 rides, and a small play area with water features. Visiting in January meant the water features weren’t working, so we didn’t spend any time in this area.
Universal Studios
Universal is seperated into 8 cities with shows, rides, and other attractions. Universal is known for their 3D and 4D experiences. If your toddler is okay with wearing the glasses you’ll have more options then if they aren’t. There are also some height restrictions. My 3 year old was barely 40” so we let him try anything he felt excited about. Hollywood and World Expo didn’t have anything we were interested in. Springfield, New York, and San Francisco each had 1 ride. My son who just met the height requirement loved the Jimmy Fallon ride. Production Central has three 4D attractions. He liked the Despicable Me one, but didn’t want to try Shrek. We also took him on the Transformer one. It was a little too intense for him and I wouldn’t do that one again. Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley had a lot to see but nothing to do for our little buddy. Our favorite area in Universal Studios was Woody Woodpecker’s Kid Zone. This is obviously THE PLACE in both parks with the most to offer. There are 2 fun shows geared towards kids. My son loved the Animal Actors. They also offer a Barney show, but we did not see it. There are 2 fun rides…ET and Woody Woodpeckers rollercoaster. ET was my son’s favorite ride by far, and this made my 80’s heart happy. They also have 2 large playgrounds in this area. We spent most of our time in this area. Fieval, and Curious George may not be relevant to a toddler today, but the play places are so much fun. I personally recommend an update to Fieval’s playland, but it was still fun.
So overall, I believe that Universal Orlando is NOT meant for toddlers. However, they’ve done a good job identifying places where kids can go and have a relatively good time. It was fun, but Disney is much more toddler friendly. I look forward to trying another fun Orlando activity on our next visit.
