Travel Agents Make Adventures Easier
Why should I use a travel agent?
Travel agents?!? Have you used them? Why do people use them? Are they worth it? In the past they were this special group of people you HAD to call up on the phone if you wanted to take a vacation. They would call different hotels, airlines, car companies, etc. all in the name of finding you great deals, and getting you on vacation. It seems that they held all the control when planning an adventure for your family. AND, because they had all of this control they would find you the perfect trip: flight, hotel, rental car, park tickets……..PERFECTLY wrapped up in a little manilla folder of information with a price tag that included everything you wanted PLUS their hefty AGENT fee. Do you remember those days? If not, your parents or grandparents do. Paying your agent was just part of the deal of travel, and one that everyone was willing to pay UNTIL…..the internet.
The internet allowed everyone access to flights, hotels, etc. With the internet, anyone can access these providers thus removing the need of travel agents. Agents were only being utilized by those who really had no time, or ideas about where to start when planning a trip. If you’re like me, I love researching all the different travel websites looking for the best deals. I love finding deals and booking trips for my family. It is so gratifying to know I save hundreds of dollars on a trip.
So the question remains…why are travel agents so utilized? I wanted to figure this out for myself so I used Little Dole Whips Travel Agency on my most recent trip to Disney World. I had heard some rumors about travel agents and decided to do some comparisons. During the process I evaluated booking prices on my own, with the rates that she provided. I also paid attention to reservation deadlines and general information. My goal was truly to identify if it was better to use an agent.
Rumor #1: You don’t pay to utilize a travel agent.
Could this be true? I don’t pay a travel agent? What about these fees that my parents use to pay? Well, this rumor is TRUE. You do not pay anything extra to use a travel agent (or at least mostly). Travel companies are no longer paid by customers. They are paid by the companies that the customer uses. This means in my case, Disney World pays my travel agent a commission on my vacation. I’m not paying her. They pay her for getting me to stay and play at their location. She books the trip, does all the planning, and makes sure I travel……. she gets paid by Disney. Travel agents work hard to make sure you get your perfect vacation planned because until you’re on that vacation, your agent doesn’t see a dime. The exception to this is airlines. Airline prices are so competitive that agents don’t see a commission on flights, therefore they do charge a fee to book them for you.
So, this got me thinking…..if I book on my own it cost me say, $100 and if an agent books it I still pay $100. But, with the agent there is more to the story…..
Rumor #2: They watch prices for you. If a lower price becomes available, they just send you the reimbursement, or take it off the balance.
This is also true. The agents are essentially working for the company you plan on visiting. They are privy to sales and promos. If one comes up, they will make a change to your account. Disney offered a one day sale between when I booked and when I traveled. My agent emailed me saying this sale had happened and then sent me an updated payment balance. She saved me $150! If I would have booked on my own I would not have known about the sale, and if I did I’d probably spend hours on the phone with Disney trying to get the new price.
Rumor #3: They can get you the reservations you WANT.
Now, this rumor is one specific to Disney, but can be applied to any trip. Disney World Fast Passes and Dining reservations are extremely competitive and hard to come by. All I did was tell my agent where we wanted to eat, and what rides we wanted, and she took care of it. She was the one waking up in the middle of the night to book all my dining and fast passes. We got to eat at all the places I wanted, when I wanted. We also got fast passes for all of the top attractions. It was so perfect. When I read comments from others on FB about how hard it was to get a reservation at a specific restaurant…. I was so thankful for my agent. I didn’t have to do anything except tell her what I wanted. And, if I wasn’t a researcher, she would have offered suggestions as well.
Random Tidbits:
*They have the most updated knowledge. They are “in the know” with what’s happening in the travel industry. If I had a question, I just asked. My agent took care of quickly answering or finding the answer for me. It was so nice not to have to worry about certain things.
*They want to keep your travel business for the future, so they give you great service, and little extras. Beyond setting everything up and taking care of all of the details, my travel agent also sent me little extras along the way. We booked our trip 8 months before we travelled. She kept us excited by sending “magic mail” which included little stickers, and a notebook. Then, right before we left she also sent a bag that we could use while we were on our adventure. It was a nice touch, that wasn’t required but made me feel special. Not all agents will do this, but I like knowing my agent cares that much.
So, overall YES! Travel agents are worth it. They can really make your adventure so much more easy. I was so surprised with all of the things I’ve learned. I think that using a travel agent really is the way to go. Whether you are super busy and just need someone to take care of everything, or you’re someone like me who researches everything you can have a teammate executing all of your wishes. It’s really opened my eyes to travel, and making my adventures easier!
