Refined Toddler Tastebuds In Disney World?
Is Tusker House for kids?
When I began booking dining for my family in Disney World I found a POLARIZING discrepancy when it came to Animal Kingdom's Tusker House’s lunch/dinner character buffet. There were 2 VERY adamant camps. One, “it is definitely not for children!” “The only thing the kids will like are the characters.” The food is “too ethnic”, and “there is nothing on the buffet to justify feeding kids”. The other camp stating, “My kids won’t go to Animal Kingdom unless we go to Tusker House. It is their favorite place to eat.” Several reviews I read also expressed that it was the best place to take a “picky eater”.
Can you see my conundrum? How was I to know what to do? I took some time to review other places within Animal Kingdom and upon FULL REVIEW I decided…..we were going to try Tusker House. I made our reservation, that also included reserved seating for the night time River of Lights show (which was a huge plus to the booking). I seriously worried the whole morning about whether this was going to be a good thing, or a huge waste of money. If you are not familiar with Disney Character Dining experiences, they are not cheap. I was risking over $100 to feed the 3 of us lunch! ( Why was I okay with this anyway ?) I also have a 3 year old! What will he really eat? But, I pushed forward and guess what…..
IT WAS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER EXPERIENCE MEAL EVER, and one of the best places we ate during the whole week-long trip. Seriously, it was perfect. I recommend this place with my whole heart. It is worth going into Animal Kingdom for (this coming from a girl who could take or leave Animal Kingdom). Let me tell you why WE loved it.
Characters:
It is a character experience meal. This means that while you eat, there are a collection of characters that come and visit your table. At Tusker House you see Mickey, Goofy, Donald, and Daisy. The best part was that we saw them several times. They take so much time with each table that it’s almost like they really are a part of your group. My son and Daisy had something special! But, she wasn’t the only one. They really had these little relationships each time they came around. We’ve never had THAT MUCH character time before. Donald and my son also led a Congo“ish” line around the dining room. They have so much fun with the kids. In this respect it really IS dining for kids.
Food:
This is it. This was the “hurt” point for so many people. So, let me tell you…my son is not a “picky eater” but he is a “familiar eater”. He prefers familiar food. Tusker House had enough food to keep him very happy and full. He enjoyed naked(baked) chicken, beans, rice, fruit, veggies, mac and cheese, and so many delicious treats. We didn’t have to feed him chicken nuggets and fries afterward. It was also better than the other character meal we went to later in the week. It was a huge win. He loved it all. My husband and I also enjoyed the food. Delicious salads, curried chicken, fire roasted meats, flavorful hummus, and some salmon that my husband LOVED! I fell in love with the dessert bar. Everything was delicious. My favorite were the pecan tarts! It was a magical 7 layer bar type dessert that I will Pinterest and make. It overall was just so tasty, and so nice to not eat more “park (fried) food”.
It is also worth noting how incredible the wait staff was. So kind, helpful, and accommodating. We never felt rushed or like we were creating any additional work for them. It really was an overall amazing experience. I have no qualms about going back, or taking others to Tusker House. It really was an all around amazing experience. It was so nice to take a break from the park, sit down, play with the characters, and have a great meal with my family in relaxing atmosphere.
