Helping Hands on Vacation
Hiring a Nanny for a few hours at Disney made all the difference
Have you ever thought..........MAN, this Disney day would be so much easier if we had just ONE more person around to help?
I think this a lot, only because it's me, my husband, and our 3 year old. But, I'm sure the momma's with 4 kids is thinking the exact same thing! I'm thinking I need the extra human for a myriad of reasons: a ride partner for my little buddy, someone to stay off the ride when he's not big enough, someone to save us a spot for the parade, a person to navigate us around to our next destination(that isn't me), someone to hold our spot in line while I take him to the bathroom...(really the list goes on and on no matter how many kids you have)
I feel lucky when we travel with extended family. They are those built in hands. My brother is always happy to be a ride partner to the little man. My dad would stay off of any ride and entertain his buddy if he's not tall enough. My mom is the "go-to" when it comes to saving you THE BEST spot for a parade! BUT.....they weren't with us on our recent trip to Disney World. So, enter the nanny.
I follow a lady over on the instagram who's job is a Disneyland nanny! How amazing of a job does that sound? She spends her days with families that need this extra set of hands. She has her own annual pass, and charges a very reasonable price for her services. For quick comparison...Disney itself does offer a similar service where you have a personal guide who will walk you through the park, be the extra rider, wait with those who don't meet requirements, and share their Disney knowledge with you. They are lovingly referred to as "The Plaids" because of their attire. To utilize the services of the plaids you pay (at least) an additional $3,000. When I read about what this lady was doing at Disneyland for a fraction of the cost, I thought to myself....there has to be a Disney World equivalent to her. I was surprised how hard it was, but I did find a company that does offer this service. Since my extended family wouldn't be on this trip with us I knew that this would be a great opportunity to test out this unique service.
Here are the things I wanted, and how she did:
* Someone to navigate Disney World
.
My family and I know and love Disneyland. We know the layout. We are familiar with it. Being in Magic Kingdom is infuriating for people like us. We turn expecting to see Adventureland and NO! There is some magic carpet and a bar. Or, head back to space mountain only to find....Buzz Lightyear's Astroblasters! We needed someone to navigate us around without us losing our minds. Our nanny knew where she was going and kept us in the right places, and at the right times. She also joked a little with us, because she grew up going to Disneyland and knew exactly why we were struggling.
* Someone to be the extra rider.
Rather than having an extra seat next to you, or sitting with a stranger we always had the nanny. 9 times out of 10 our son chose to ride with her too, allowing my husband and I to ride some rides together.
*
Someone to stay off the rides when our buddy was too short.
Our son was too short for Space Mountain and our nanny was willing to stay off and wait with him playing nearby. We however were not willing to wait in the 75 minute queue. Our nanny also informed us that Magic Kingdom Space Mountain doesn't have a single rider line(Disneyland does) so we didn't have that option either. But, that's why we had her with us....if we wanted to have waited 75 minutes in line without our son we could have.
*Line entertainment
We weren't expecting this one, but after almost a week of being just the 3 of us it was nice to have a "new" person around to visit with in line. We chatted about running, Disney, and our son. She especially offered a lot of good Disney World insight(Things that I wanted to hear about). It was also fun for our buddy because he had someone who could entertain him in line as he got bored(that was also not mom or dad).
*Parade viewing & entertainment
Our nanny found us the best spot for the parade. She took our buddy right up to the rope while my husband and I stayed back watching from benches! That's right. We got to relax while she kept an eye on him on the front row of the parade. The best part was that we got there right before it started. We didn't have to wait for hours before like my mom does at Disneyland. I was able to sit back and really enjoy HIM. He loved the parade. I never worried about him running away because I knew there were other eyes right on him. Now, whether the nanny knew it would happen or not, Alice and the White Rabbit stopped right at my son's feet for a chat. Did she place him there on purpose, or was it a magical coincidence? I guess I'll never know.
Overall it was a great experience. I would hire a nanny again at Disney World. I feel confident enough in Disneyland that I wouldn't need one for too long there(only long enough to ride a few rides with my husband). But, at Disney World it was helpful. I especially liked having her in Magic Kingdom where I seem to get lost so easily. I also really appreciated the fun she had with my son.
A few things to note:
*Most nannies do have minimum time requirements. They want to make it worth their time to be there. If you only want them a couple hours, it probably isn't worth it to them.
*This person is still a stranger as far as I'm concerned. I wasn't prepared to leave my son out of my sight for too long.
*They are service providers. Please don't forget to tip them.
*They probably know more about the place then you do. Ask questions, and have fun.
