Sleeping on a Plane
My review of a couple popular travel pillows
Do you have plans to ride on a plane? Do you want to sleep on said plane? Have you seen those travel pillows online, or even in the airport that promise a “comfortable way to sleep”? Really, 30 inches of pitch in an upright position next to a wiggly kid or even a stranger….is it really going to be THAT COMFORTABLE?
I’ve tried those pillows…they don’t work! They are one more thing to haul around. They are a souvenir that you really DON’T WANT. So, I’ve always brought what I thought to be the best travel pillow. I bring my sweatshirt or coat (that I’m bringing with me no matter where I’m traveling anyway (in case it gets chilly)) and I have that trusty tray table. Check it out below…. it’s effective, and I get just as much sleep as those who bring along their pillow ring, but I have other uses for my “pillow”.
I have been curious though! I always see and hear people talking about these new and improved travel pillows that give you better rest and support your neck, so you don’t wake up feeling like you’ve been holding a raw egg under your chin for hours. I’ve also been intrigued by the photos they show of customers using the product. I mean, don’t you want to try the one below out? Come on!!!
Here’s what I did…I bought the 2 MOST popular neck pillows on Amazon. They both have over 4,000 reviews and 4 out 5 stars. I figured with stats like this…. they must be heaven sent. So, let me tell you about them. It’s one less thing you’ll have to review on Amazon. Just trust me!
First up….
The B Cozzy. Sure, this looks like a standard airport pillow…but do you see that…on the label? It’s a PATENTED style. Yup, It’s different. Let me start with the basics. It sells for around $30 on Amazon. The brochure touts 3 different ways to use it. The comfort, which is your basic airport pillow. The elevated side, which is where you just tighten it up around your neck and lean your head to the side. The final one is called double up. This is where you can take the pillow which has less padding in the middle and simply fold it and lean to one side. It also has a convenient strap on the back so you can easily attach it to your backpack or luggage seeing as it is still looking exactly like a standard travel pillow.
Now, as we traveled my husband used the B Cozzy because he preferred its look to the other pillow from the start. I tried to be as basic in the last paragraph, but my opinion may have come through. We did not like this pillow. Why? It’s a standard neck pillow but with a flimsy back, so you can’t lean back and get support. As you can see from my glamorous “try this” photo below (since I didn’t get any photos of us using them on the plane) my neck is not supported. I’m not a small human, but I would expect a neck pillow touting that you can wrap it around your neck to a stacking position to be a bit longer. Also, if one of the best ways for me to use it is to fold it over twice…. why don’t I just get a memory foam pillow? Forbes states that it is billed as the best chin support pillow on the market…but again, that’s saying you have only 1 small petite neck (we’ve got double chins around here). I’m serious! I don’t think a normal size man’s neck is going to get this chin support. But…reviews (mostly from women for women and children) do believe in this pillow.
Next, the trtl pillow….
Let me start my saying…this is not a pillow. It’s a neck support…brace(maybe). But for sake of the review and argument, lets call it a pillow. It also sells for around $30 on Amazon. The label states that 9 out of 10 people choose this pillow over the U-shaped pillows. It is a U shape, which does make it easier to pack as well. It also states…scientifically proven neck support. You can see that the model looks very cozy, and ready for her long-haul flight. There is also a hint of a smile. You know she believes.
I was the lucky one to try the trtl pillow. My husband was apprehensive of the wrap feature. Honestly so was I (you know, with the double chins and all). So, I opened the wrap up and there are convenient stickers telling you where to put your neck, chin, jaw, or shoulder, and how to wrap. It was very simple. It also wrapped around my neck. As you can see from the awesome shot below you can see that not as much of my neck was tucked away under the cozy fabric. But I am also not one to complain about how cold my lower neck is. So, I was fine. Now, for the support and sleep. I stated earlier that this is more of support than a pillow, and it truly is. It cradles your neck like…. well, a neck brace. But only on one side. The other side is swaddled in the comfort of the fabric. It really was cozy. I just rested my face into that brace and didn’t worry about anything else. It really was comfortable. I did wake up part of the way through to flip it over to the other side. Not because it was uncomfortable, but because I was antsy. I really enjoyed this neck “pillow”.
So, in conclusion. We did not like the B Cozzy, but I did like the trtl. I’m pretty sure my husband will try it on our next flight. If he does, great we will buy another one. But I’m also still a firm believer that if you are limited on space, use that sweatshirt or coat and pull down that tray table.
