After a long day traveling....let's head to the ER
I never leave home without my faith and my insurance card
****I start this post with no intent to offend. Especially to those who choose not to believe in a higher power or those who may not have health insurance. I only write this post to share a little bit more about me as a Child of God, and about my experience as a traveler who is thankful for the health care I have.
There are always 2 things I travel with no matter how far away from home I am going.
One, is my insurance card. This may make complete sense, but if you are harmed away from home...the hospital where you are headed wants that information. It’s one less thing to worry about in an emergency if you just have it on hand.
Second, is my faith. Now, this one may sound a little silly and intangible. No matter where I go I always make sure I have God with me. One thing I have never shared through adventuresmadeeasy.com
is my religion. I only now share it because it’s relevant, and I hope that it gives you insight into me. I also know that because of God I have been blessed and the events of our recent trip need to be shared.
After a fun exciting day at the local amusement park, Six Flags The Great Escape
(where I rode The Comet(one of my new favorite coasters of all time)) and dinner in a neighboring town, we headed to our hotel for the evening. Due to the time change, our 3 year old was not prepared for bed at 10:30 pm!!! We, the parents were but he was not, so we unpacked and left him to his own devices. We allow him to jump on the beds of the hotels because....well, we are cool parents and why not jump on hotel beds to burn off steam?...We also allow him to make collect calls using the hotel phone. He enjoys calling Japan. Little does he know we unplug the phone the moment we arrive. He also enjoys locking the coffee pods in the hotel safe. Luckily we don’t drink coffee so we don’t mind. Anyway....this particular night he also had access to a barstool for his jumping antics. He had kept to jumping from bed to bed for most of his time but at one point he decided to add the barstool. This was a stable barstool, yet we had told him we did not want him climbing the barstool to jump. We sillily assumed he understood until we saw him climbing the stool and NOT sitting down to color or play with the toys on the table. He proceeded to stand on the barstool which quickly gave out...resulting in what I can only describe as a parental nightmare.
His head quickly collided with the edge of the radiator that rested against the wall. Both my husband and I ran over to him as he began to wail. He was in serious pain. We both knew this was not good. Blood began running from the back of his head. I’ve heard that head injuries bleed a lot but when it’s YOUR child it appears that pints are being lost at a rapid pace. It was in this moment that all I wanted was MY MOM, MY DAD, someone grown up to come help. But here we were, just 2 kids in a strange city trying to figure out what to do with OUR kid. I held our little man with a towel on his head trying to slow the bleeding while he kept professing that he was okay through his sobs. My husband was yelling at Siri for the nearest ER, and all she kept giving him were the hospitals in our home state. Not helpful, Siri! He then dialed 911 where the operator stated that they could get an ambulance to us, but it would be faster for us to drive to the hospital that was 20 minutes away. Once my husband had gotten the hospital information and got dressed we switched places. He took Buddy, and I got dressed and entered the hospital information into our GPS. During these quick seconds my husband also gave our son a Priesthood blessing. We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and as such we believe that Priesthood powers given in the Old Testament have been restored and are given to worthy men in our church. In those quick seconds of our emergency my husband used his authority to bless our son to be calm, safe, and get the medical attention that he needed. Through God’s power and my husbands prayer I felt a sense of peace that everything would be okay.
We all hopped in the car, followed the GPS and drove to the hospital 20 minutes away. Of course because it was so late, the little guy began to get tired. I however was afraid of a concussion and didn’t want him to fall asleep so I did everything I could to keep him awake. Rolling down the windows. Tickling him. Asking him about things inside and outside of the car. Once we arrived at the hospital there were several parties ahead of us, but due to some miracle we were seen very quickly. The doctor took us back, looked at his head, and decided he needed only 1 staple. Phew!!! It was a relief. Seeing them staple his delicate head was no fun, but as soon as it was over and he was cleared of a concussion he fell asleep quickly in my arms. Before he fell asleep he requested 2 lullabies...both church songs! I instantly melted knowing that my prayers and the blessing he had received were proof of just one little miracle in our life. My mommy heart was full.
I know miracles happen to people every day. I also know that there are bigger emergencies than my kid hitting his head while playing, but for me in that moment I was thankful for my faith, and the Priesthood. I’m thankful that I could share this story if for no other reason then to share my gratitude. So please....if at all possible....travel with your faith and your insurance card.
