That's My Plane!
Best Tips for Booking a Domestic Flight
I’m leaving on a jet plane…………I WISH! Do you ever fantasize about travel? No, just me? I’ve recently been looking at flights to far off places, and dreaming that I’m laying under a beach umbrella watching my husband and son build a sandcastle. Yup, it’s a magical time, but not AT ALL my reality.
I’ve been looking at flights because a friend recently asked me WHEN the best time to book a flight was. I took my knowledge and did some testing, and guess what……. THESE ARE THE BEST TIPS FOR BOOKING A DOMESTIC FLIGHT. I’m only focusing on domestic, because international flights are a whole other adventure, for another day.
My best answers are:
54 days in advance. Extensive research has been done, and 54 days is the “magic number” when it comes to booking a domestic flight. Why? I don’t know. Maybe because at 54 days it’s close enough to traveling, but also far enough out that the airlines know you’ve really planned the trip.
Slow season. Airlines offer better deals in February, September/October, and the beginning of December. It’s their slow season, so they have “the best deals”.
Travel on Wednesday. Wednesday is typically the cheapest day to travel. Sundays are the worst.
Use Google Flights Google flights lists most airlines and compares them right on one neat page. If you love a specific airline, and they aren’t listed just………
Go directly to the airlines site I like using 2 specific airline companies, so I use their websites regularly to book flights. It’s cheaper than using hosting sites like Expedia or Kayak. I also have accounts with my favorites. They will email you the latest promotions and deals. These emails tend to come on the 1st day of a sale, which typically means………….
Book on a Tuesday Most airlines list their sales on Tuesdays, so this is a great day to book. You’ll have the biggest selection of dates and times.
Once I’m on the airline website there are a few ways to ensure the best price as well.
BE FLEXIBLE! Some airlines offer “be flexible” as an option when searching because they know you’re searching for a reasonable rate.
Look for nearby airports. Sometimes flying into a neighboring city can save you hundreds. Flying into Long Beach is much cheaper than flying into Orange County airport. So, just be aware of surrounding airports.
Use connecting flights. These can usually save you over direct flights. Yes, it’s more travel time but it can save money.
I also suggest having a credit card that allows you to use travel points but that’s another thing entirely. So…for now, these are my tips for when to book and when to fly. Hopefully it can help you book your next trip to somewhere magical. I'll just be over here under my imaginary beach umbrella WISHING.
