Running For Travel
If you need an excuse, make it running.
A few weeks ago my family went on a little vacation to California. We MOSTLY were going for Disneyland BUT we wanted more out of this vacation. So, I did some research and found a half marathon for my husband to run. He's doing some training for a full in January, so why not do a training run in California? ...This is seriously one of my favorite tips about traveling....Run a race while on vacation.
Running use to be one of my favorite sports(and I hope it will be again one day). But, back in 2012 I was a running machine. My cousin and I had decided to run 12 half marathons in the year. It was an awesome goal for many reasons. One reason I loved it so much was because inspite of living in Utah, we were able to find a race every month. Not in Utah!!! Which meant we got to travel. 3 of my races were in California, and I love running in California. There are (usually) very few hills, and running at sea level is far easier than Utah's elevation.
I've mentioned before how much I LOVE RunDisney races
but I'm not only a Disney runner. 2 of my favorite races outside of Disney have been in California. The Surf City Half
starts at Huntington Beach and runs down the coast and back. It's a beautiful and flat course. My other favorite is the Hollywood Half Marathon. This race, although closer to sea level then home, is intense. You run around the Hollywood hills, and down the famous boulevard. You finish the race on the Universal Studios City Walk. It's intense, but the energy and people cheering you on along LITERALLY the entire course makes it one of my favorites.
Another reason I love running while traveling is because I seem to gain less weight then I normally would. If I could only count the number of times I've justified a high calorie treat with the excuse, "I can eat this. I just ran a half marathon." It makes me feel okay about not eating vegetables for a couple days. Vacation eating for us means splurging, and being able to run makes it that much more appealing.
After using running as a reason for travel over the past few years we've also learned the best tip ever............Make the race the START of your vacation. I think every normal person gets nervous before a big race, so if you run the race first you get it out of the way and can enjoy your vacation a little more without worrying about an upcoming race. It's truly made our vacations so much better.
I believe that running for travel has made vacationing even more enjoyable. It has also taken me to places I may have not gone before and I truly enjoy the experience. I fully support anyone wanting to run for travel. I'm looking at some international races to get us out of the United States as well. Any suggestions?
