Spring Break for these Adventurers!
I’ve been asked several times what big adventure we were planning on going on during spring break this year. It’s always an interesting question because…ya, we love getting out and we SHOULD be out exploring some far-off place. But, here’s the fact…my husband works at a place that is busy when kids are out of school. So….weekends, holidays, summer vacation, and spring break keep us (literally) grounded. It was an adjustment for me because I lived a previous life as an educator, so every weekend, holiday, summer, and spring break were my ONLY time to travel. But I do have to say I prefer it this way. We now travel when everyone else is home, and “in the grind”. Yes, I know that one day when our Buddy is bigger and trying to get into Ivy League colleges, he’ll need to attend high school but for now this works for us.
What do we do for Spring Break then? Well, the little man and I have adventures during the day and we get out with Dad at night. It’s really not too different from when Buddy is in school except, he’s with me all day and not at preschool. As he grows up into elementary school I know it will change a little, but there are still a few fundamentals that will make up our spring breaks.
#1: One or two camps or activities just for the little man. He’s super independent and I want to continue to foster this in him. I love seeing him navigate the world. Figuring out places, spaces, and relationships in an environment guided by someone other than me is important for his growth. This spring break he attended two camps. Each one was 2 and half hours long. The first one was about getting food from the farm to the table. The second was all about baby animals.
#2: One or two “out of the ordinary” activities as a family. Something special that we don’t normally do is a nice way to break up the week and gives us all something to look forward to.
#3: Daily learning time. Whether it’s letter tiles, number blocks, etc. I like to come up with at least one specific letter or number activity a day. We may play other activities that have these elements, but one specific one is great. I usually like to find something new for this on Pinterest.
#4: Computer time. Yup, I give him computer time daily(usually). Depending on how much time there is in a day. He has 2 great learning programs that I will sit and watch him play (sure I’m probably scrolling social media, but I’m there with him when he gets stuck).
#5: Activities. These are varied daily. Sometimes he plays by himself so I can get things done, other times I’m right there playing with him.
Really, I’m just doing the mom thing during spring break as if he doesn’t go to preschool yet, but like I said, I don’t see these things changing much as he grows. I also haven’t said, but it needs mentioning…I like to do as many things as possible outside. We’ve had a really rainy spring break but we’ve played in the yard, went to the park, and gone to a couple outdoor events.
What I’m really trying to say is….nope, we don’t have big spring break plans. We stay close to home and enjoy the family time. That’s my goal…I just want to enjoy our time together, and always. I hope you have a great spring break, however grand or simple your plans may be.
