Flying with a Toddler
Updated October 7, 2019 to include "small, and not so tiny humans"
We are preparing for a cross country flight to Orlando this weekend with our charming 3-year-old (who's now a proper 4 year old) . I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. What parent wouldn’t be? You are TRAPPED in a flying bullet, sharing air with over 100 strangers for hours. And, let’s be honest…. they aren’t providing a full-blown stage production to keep you engaged to help the time “fly by”. They DO offer INCHES of angled leg space that they call “pitch”, and a 15 degree angled recline to really make you feel like you are living the life…. ANYWAY!
On a longer flight (I’m not talking international today, that’s for another post) you must come up with fun ways to entertain your little ones, so they don’t drive your fellow travelers crazy. Heck, you don’t want to lose your own mind. So, I have found 4 tips that (still) work for us. Some of them are similar to the tips I share in Road Trippin with Toddlers , but it’s different since…well, it’s a PLANE!
SLEEP… If you can book a red eye flight, do it! For 2 reasons! 1. I loathe wasting a vacation day on traveling to the destination. Get me there! I love the efficiency of a red eye. With that being said, yes I know it will leave you and your kid(s) a little more tired, but what is wrong with a midday nap or an early night in? 2. If my little buddy is sleeping, he isn’t bothering other travelers.
TREATS... The airline gives you snacks for a reason. They want to give you something to look forward to during your flight…whether it’s peanuts, or fresh fruit we humans love watching those flight attendants walk up the aisles with treats and drinks. Guess what…time flies while you wait for those snacks. And, time flies when you let your kids know that treats are on the horizon too. If they know you’ve packed some of their favorite snacks you can let them know that they will get them. I’d turn it into a game even. For example: After 5 people walk by our seat you can pick a treat. Or, you can pick the next treat after 30 min. (shorter for smaller kids). Then, set a timer on your phone. Also, if your kid is HANGRY, you have treats and snacks packed to satisfy.
PRIZES… I love packing little toys, and games in lunch sacks. I pack new toys, and YES. I even pack some of our favorite regular games, and toys. As soon as we are bored, or irritable….out comes another prize. This has worked like a charm. I like to include play dough, window clings, cars, boogie boards, puzzles.
SCREENS… I’m not afraid of screen time on long trips, but I’m also more interested in finding FUN things to DO WITH my kid. I always prepare to use it, and truthfully end up using it far less than I plan on! We don’t have a "fancy" tablet, but it can hold a movie and a couple games(no-wifi). If necessary, our son likes to watch his movie or play a game. I don’t limit it at all. If none of my other tricks are working and he wants to zone on a screen…I let him. Whatever gets us through the flight. I’m also open to the in-seat screens. Those are “cool” and novel and fun to play with. I get it. I play with it too. Anything to pass the time, am I right?
That’s it! If we are going far, we try to go overnight. I pack lots of fun treats for the boredom and toddler hunger pains. I pack fun prizes…new and old! Finally, just give into screen time. That’s it. What else would you add to this list? What works for you and your family?
