Disneyland's Annual Passes
Is The New Flex Pass Worth It?
My
family’s Disneyland annual passes just expired, and we were fine with that. Our plan IS/WAS to stay away from Disneyland
until mid-2020 and let the craziness from Star War’s Galaxy Edge
die down
a bit. Well, if you know me, or the 2
adorable Disney monsters I imprinted on, you know that staying away from Disney
is very difficult. THEN…. Disney went
and introduced a brand new annual pass!
Now, I’m not saying that I’m running to the website to renew…but I am
researching my options nearly a year before I planned on it. So, I figured I would share the details while
I’m at it. I’m not speaking to the
California resident passes because those are their own kind of “special” and
have so many restrictions and limitations.
I’m talking annual passes available to any Disneyland fan.
There are 5 Disneyland Annual Passes Available as of May 21, 2019:
*All annual passes are priced for ages 3 and older.
$1949 - Disney Premier : This magic card gets you admission to all of the parks in Disneyland and Disney World. That’s right! Both coasts anytime! Parking, PhotosPass, and MaxPass included. Up to 15% discount on dining and 20% on merchandise purchases.

$1149- Signature: Admission to Disneyland and Californian Adventure anytime except Dec. 21-Jan 4.(2019-2020) MaxPass can be added for $100. Up to 15% discount on dining and 20% on merchandise purchases.
$799- Deluxe: Admission to Disneyland and California Adventure on most days (2019-2020) See the website for d ates. MaxPass can be added for $100. Up to 10% discount on dining and merchandise.
$599- Flex: Admission to Disneyland and California Adventure on most week days (2019-2020) being called “good to go” days. As well as by reservation every other day except Dec. 21-Jan 4 which are blacked out. MaxPass can be added for $100. Up to 10% discount on dining and merchandise. So, that’s the passes. But….this new “FLEX” pass has so many stipulations and rules that really need some explaining to decide if it’s worth the $200 price difference over a Deluxe pass.
First, to really understand the Flex Pass you’ll want to take a look at the Park calendars on the Disneyland app or website. You simply select Flex Pass and then either Disneyland or California Adventure. I’ve done the research and, YES they are different. Both parks have the same GREY dates which means they are blacked out the same dates, which for 2019-2020 are December 21-January 4(These blackout dates apply to the Flex, Deluxe, and Signature).
Now, for the “good to go” days.. Green are “good to go”. This means that the park is available to go to. You just take your pass to the gate and you get in. Done! California Adventure has more “good to go” days than Disneyland. So, if you are planning your adventure…be aware. The following dates are G2G at CA, but not Disneyland: June 3-5, Aug 19-22, Aug. 26-29, Sept. 6, Nov. 8, June 1-3. If you plan a trip on any of these days and want to park hop, or want to visit Disneyland you’re going to need a reservation…
Blue are “reservation” dates. This is where things can get complicated, so stay with me…. You can still get into Disneyland or California Adventure on a blue date, but only if you have made a reservation. Yup…You have to have planned ahead and made a reservation.
Up to 30 days before you plan on visiting you must log in to your account and make a reservation IF there is space available (If there are no more reservation spots available the calendar will state “Reservation Unavailable”). You can make up to 2 reservations (Disneyland, California Adventure, or Both) per Flex Pass during a 30-day window. You can make reservations for others as well, as long as their pass is linked to your account.
Maybe you’re thinking….what about people that just go in and select dates all the time, and leave nothing available…..well, Disney has thought ahead with a couple of options….they have a Cancellation Policy-You can cancel up until 11:59 pm the day before your reservation with no penalty(using the app or website). They also have a No-Show Policy: if you are a “no show” for 3 reservations in a 90-day window you will be unable to make a new reservation for 30 days after the 3rd “no show”.
So, now the question is...Is it worth it? Is any of it worth it? Well, that depends on how often you travel to Disneyland?
A one day-one park pass is $149. A park hopper is $199. So if you go to Disneyland 1 day at a time and park hop, you need to go 3 times to make the Flex Pass equivalent.
A 3-day park hopper is $355. So, if you go to Disney 2 times at 3 days a visit, you’ve made it worth it. BUT…that’s just the Flex Pass. You have to be willing to travel on the good to go travel days, OR hope that your reservation days don’t sell out.
The other passes all depend on how much you travel and what is best for your and your family. What do you think of this new Flex Pass?
