Build a Souvenir
Giving my kid some SKILLS
Okay, I feel the need to share about this fun monthly adventure we have. It’s something we do when we are home, BUT I would not be opposed to doing it if we were out of town adventuring as well. Especially if we are visiting a place and looking for fun things to do with a kid. I’m sharing it because it brings my son such joy, that I really can’t NOT share it.
Home Depot!
They offer a monthly kid’s project, and they are always a blast. The first Saturday of the month we take ourselves to our local Home Depot with our BFF Cousin and Poppi, (Aunt, and Uncle too) and truly create some amazing works of functional art.
I found out about these projects about a year and half ago, and we’ve rarely missed a month. It’s really easy. You sign up online (or just stop in), head into the Home Depot anytime during the designated project time, visit the desk where you are given the project, an apron (if you don’t already have one), and pin to put on your apron once you complete the project. After that you head to the tables where the hammers (Yes, hammers) and screw drivers are set up. You then let your kids build the project (with as much or as little help as you think they’ll need). My son loves hammering things and using real tools. It’s been so much fun to allow him to build something that he feels proud to have created. After it’s built you head over to the painting table. My niece LOVES the painting portion. The paint and brushes are all out just ready to be used. It’s a very creative space. My son tends to go with the “less is more” approach but he’s getting a little more into it. Then, you place your project on a Home Depot plate and you are free to leave.
We usually find ourselves wandering the aisles in the logo-ed car carts for about thirty minutes while we “let the paint dry”. Plus, my son loves his Uncle making the “car” go SUPER FAST. It really is a super fun morning for our family. I love that it is a monthly THING!
But like I said I’d be happy to do it away from home too. I think it would be a familiar place to go while on vacation where we could get a unique souvenir, and get this…. the best part…. IT’S TOTALLY FREE!!! Hello, sign up now.
